Tips When Purchasing Plantation Blinds vs Wood Shutters

When it comes to purchasing window coverings or treatments for the inside of your home, weigh the merits and demerits of blinds versus plantation blinds. How do they compare? Which is better? What should you look for when you decide to invest in shutters?

Plantation blinds versus plantation shutters

While the initial cost for installing blinds is cheaper than plantation shutters, there is a lot more to consider. While blinds may appear to be the cheapest way to go at the starting line of the home improvement race, they rapidly fade to the back of the pack as the running continues.

Plantation Blinds are widely accepted but the choice of shutters has inherent advantages

  • Safer. No cords or strings to entangle and choke children. Cords are deadly hazards with older blinds. You still find them in use today.
  • Stylishly sleek look. You can hide the adjustment bars out of sight behind the slats. Blinds have an institutional, linear feel.
  • Make a statement about appreciating fashion and style.
  • Close tighter. They are wider and more rigid than blinds, so they close tightly and are not susceptible to kinking and bending.
  • Better light control. They are constructed in adjustable sections so you can individually modify each area. Blinds all tilt at the same angle or direction.
  • Superior privacy. They seal tightly with very none of the pesky gaps on the sides like blinds.
  • Wood Shutters are “furniture on the wall.” They are solid and substantial when compared to blinds.
  • Increase the resale value of homes. They add lasting value to a home.
  • Easy to clean and maintain. Just occasionally dust your shutters or wipe them down with a damp cloth.
  • Highly durable. Compared to blinds, vinyl and wood shutters are indestructible. You’ve experienced bent metal slats in blinds. Straightening them is worse than trying to put toothpaste back in the tube.

It’s easy to see why so many Nevadans prefer plantation shutters over flimsy blinds and cheap pull down shades.

There are some basic things to think about firstly when choosing plantation shutters for window treatments

Plantation shutters

Width of slats Wood Shutter slats are most commonly 3½ or 4½ inches wide. Personal preference usually drives the decision about this. You are going to visually prefer one over the other.

How to mount them: Shutters can be mounted a couple of different ways. Inset mounting sets the unit inside of the surrounding wall so they fit flush and don’t protrude into the room. Exterior mounting boxes the shutters over the windows and creates a more intrusive and stunning display.

Durability of construction Shutters are made of vinyl, PVC, wood laminate over metal, or Best Buy Shutters’ patented PolyCel©. That means your shutters will easily last for 25-30 years.

Local manufacturing When shutters are made overseas and imported, installing them can be delayed for weeks and even months while you wait for them. Local construction means faster service and easy problem solving.

Reputable and well-respected company Work with a company that has been around a long time. Be sure they have a good reputation for quality and service.

Employee installers Some companies hire independent contractors or subcontractors to do their installations. Those people are accountable to their company and not to you and Best Buy Shutters. And the churn in their personnel is shocking.

Licensed and bonded This is Nevada where no matter the industry, we see it all. Guys with pickup trucks and a line of credit at Home Depot call themselves shutter companies. Don’t let any unlicensed and unbonded service provider into your home. Those who do are asking for trouble.
